Archibald-Joseph CRONIN est né en 1896 à Levenford (Ecosse). Médecin dans une région industrielle du Pays de Galles pendant quelques années, puis inspecteur des mines (1924), il présente à l'université de Glasgow une thèse sur les anévrismes (1925).
Il s'installe à Londres et s'y crée une clientèle importante. Obligé au repos par le surmenage, il écrit pour se distraire Le Chapelier et son château (1931) dont le succès immédiat et considérable se renouvelle avec La citadelle (en grande partie autobiographique), Les Clefs du royaume, Les Vertes Années, etc.
Ses expériences de médecin des pauvres ont été racontées dans le célèbre roman : La Citadelle.
A.-J. CRONIN vit actuellement en Suisse. Romancier populaire dans le monde entier, Archibald-Joseph CRONIN partage dès lors son temps entre écrire et voyager. Il a publié jusqu'ici plus de vingt volumes.
